The United States Embassy in Colombo has dismissed reports suggesting that a special team from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had been dispatched to Sri Lanka over recent cybercrime investigations.
The clarification came after media reports claimed that FBI officials had arrived in the country to probe alleged cyber thefts involving millions of dollars, including funds connected to the Sri Lankan Treasury and a separate payment intended for U.S. postal authorities.
In response, the Embassy stated that there has been no extraordinary FBI deployment to Sri Lanka. Officials explained that the U.S. Embassy routinely maintains an FBI Legal Attaché presence, which is common practice in many countries to support ongoing cooperation between American law enforcement agencies and local authorities.
According to the Embassy, these representatives work closely with host nations when coordination or assistance is required on matters involving international law enforcement.
The statement was issued amid growing public attention surrounding reports of cyber-related financial crimes and speculation about increased U.S. investigative activity in Sri Lanka.
