Sri Lanka’s Board of Investment (BOI) has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable investment, calling on businesses and government officials to make environmental responsibility part of their everyday operations rather than an annual commitment.
Speaking during the BOI’s Environment Day programme, Director General Dr. Sulakshana Jayawardena said protecting the environment requires consistent action and long-term thinking. He stressed that environmental challenges cannot be solved overnight and that meaningful progress comes from small, continuous improvements over time.
“As the country’s main agency for attracting foreign direct investment, the BOI has a responsibility not only to encourage new investment but also to ensure that economic growth supports Sri Lanka’s environmental goals,” he explained.
Higher standards for investors
Dr. Jayawardena highlighted the importance of Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) and sustainable supply chain management, encouraging companies operating under the BOI to demonstrate their environmental performance through measurable results rather than simply making commitments.
He also called for greater cooperation between businesses and government agencies to improve environmental management, promote responsible land use and encourage production methods that protect Sri Lanka’s natural resources.
The BOI says it will continue working to strengthen environmental oversight while supporting businesses that adopt internationally recognised sustainability standards.
Why this matters for foreign investors
For foreign investors, the announcement reflects Sri Lanka’s growing focus on attracting high-quality, responsible investment rather than simply increasing the number of projects.
Businesses looking to establish manufacturing facilities, tourism developments or export-oriented operations in Sri Lanka should expect environmental compliance to become an increasingly important part of the investment process. Companies that already follow international standards, such as Good Manufacturing Practices, sustainable sourcing and environmental management systems, are likely to find themselves better positioned when working with the BOI.
The emphasis on evidence-based environmental practices also aligns Sri Lanka more closely with global investment trends, where environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards play an increasingly important role in attracting international capital.
For long-term investors, this is a positive signal. A stronger focus on sustainability can help protect Sri Lanka’s natural assets, improve the country’s international reputation and create a more stable investment environment—particularly in sectors such as manufacturing, tourism, agriculture and exports, where environmental standards are becoming increasingly important in global markets.
